01. What is a Spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet is essentially a grid or table made up of columns (which are represented by letters) and rows (which are represented by numbers). Each individual square within that grid (called a cell) can hold or generate data and be formatted to present that data in a myriad of ways:

The benefits of an application that can store, manipulate and present data may or may not be immediately obvious but as we move through this tutorial you will hopefully begin to appreciate the power, flexibility and versatility of spreadsheets.

There are many applications out there that let you work with spreadsheets; Microsoft Excel is probably the most famous and most used, but also the most expensive.
