01: What is HTML5?

So you want to make a website. Well, let me tell you straight up, web design is an ENORMOUS field! I can assure you there isn’t a single person on the planet who knows all facets of web design. That’s right, more than 7 billion people on the planet and not a single one has all the knowledge…so what does that mean for you?

It means we need a starting point. What I’m providing in this tutorial is exactly that. Walk with me through the lessons on the right and you should understand what makes up a web page and you should have a solid foundation for continuing your interest in web design.

Making web pages has been around since the inception of the world-wide web (which was in 1989 in case you were wondering) and since that time the technology industry has exploded. Because of that, the way you write a web page has changed and so we’re left with all these different languages trying to do essentially the same thing…put a web page on the Internet.

HTML5 is the most recent language being used by people making web pages and so this tutorial (along with most of my other web-related ones) is going to teach you how to use it instead of the myriad other options. While the differences may not be much between HTML5 and HTML4.01 or XHTML, let’s just err on the side of caution and go with the most recent.
